In a significant move to address the housing shortage, the Tasmanian Government has announced the release of over 600 hectares of land across Greater Hobart, paving the way for the construction of nearly 10,000 new homes. This expansion of urban growth boundaries is the largest in years, targeting areas in Brighton, Clarence, Kingborough, and Sorell.
A Show of Support for Builders
Housing Minister Felix Ellis emphasised the government’s commitment to facilitating home construction by reducing bureaucratic obstacles and signaling strong support for the building industry. He stated, “We’re backing in the builders, cutting red tape and sending a clear message to the construction industry. Tassie is open for business and keen to get building”
However, the initiative has faced criticism from the opposition. Labor’s Luke Edmunds pointed out that Tasmania ranks last in the country for housing construction, with building approvals at an eight-year low. He highlighted issues such as workforce shortages and insufficient training opportunities for apprentices as significant barriers to meeting housing demands.
How Will This Be Achieved?
To support this land release, the government plans to update the regional land use strategy, with community consultations set to commence within 100 days. This move aims to ensure that the expansion aligns with sustainable growth and community needs.
