Brew with a Builder – Our Chat with Tanya King, General Manager of Cross Constructions
The Good Builder is all about shining a spotlight on builders who are raising the bar, and every week, we have an informal chat with one of the best in the business to find out what makes them tick. This week, in our series of casual chats in Brew with a Builder, we sit down with Tanya King, General Manager of Cross Constructions, to uncover some of the secrets that have made their business a success.
What got you into the industry?
My background is as a clinical dietitian, and I worked in a hospital for almost 10 years. Once I met my partner Paul, I was quite burnt out from the hospital environment. I specialised in cancer care but ended up resigning from that role. Paul was working as a carpenter, and at the time, I suggested that we start a building company. Initially, my role was just to set up the business—marketing, systems, documentation—but I’ve never left. That was eight years ago.
What motivated you to take the approach you have?
I had built a house with a local builder before meeting Paul and had a really positive experience. I decided that if we were to start a company, we would do it the right way, running a professional and ethical operation. That has been our mission from day one.
What was the first year like, and where did you find your first job?
In the beginning, I spent a lot of time cycling and meeting people, similar to how some network over golf. We began getting referrals from this community. Our initial projects included a restaurant and a bar fit-out, mainly focusing on renovations and commercial projects. Since COVID, we shifted towards high-end architectural homes, which is now our main focus.
How did you manage work-life balance in the early days?
It was tough, especially in the first 3 to 4 years. We didn’t have children then, and it was long days and late nights. Initially, it was just Paul and me—he managed the onsite work, and I handled everything operational, administrative, and financial. It took time for us to align our working styles and define our strengths.
Any advice for builders in the same boat?
If you’re working with your partner, clearly define roles and responsibilities.
Also, know your numbers. Financial literacy is key. Understanding cash flow and financial health can make or break a business. Project management and administration are also critical.
Coming from a medical background, how did you skill up in construction?
I undertook a Cert IV in Contracts Administration, a Cert IV in Construction, and a Diploma in Project Management. I also taught myself Xero for accounting and bookkeeping. Additionally, we engaged a business coach for two years, which was helpful in the early stages.
What’s your favourite project so far?
Probably our own home on Barns Street West in Buderim, completed three years ago. We lived there for about a year before selling it last year.
The process taught us a lot, particularly about the client experience, and helped refine our processes.
Why was that your favourite?
It was a personal project that allowed us to walk in our client’s shoes. We experienced firsthand the decisions and challenges our clients face, which helped us better understand and improve our processes.
What are the biggest challenges facing the construction industry?
Compliance and regulation are complex, more so than in healthcare. Builders need to be across the National Construction Code, Workplace Health and Safety, and various legislations. The other challenge is attracting skilled workers, especially apprentices. There’s a noticeable decline in young people entering trades, which will be a challenge given the government’s target to build 1.2 million homes over the next five years.
How have you found attracting apprentices and staff?
We’ve been fortunate recently. In the last month, we’ve had multiple inquiries from carpenters and have employed a new apprentice. Our strong community presence and reputation likely help attract quality staff.
What sets Cross Constructions apart?
We are ethical and transparent, with every client interaction designed around what we would want to experience. Our systems and processes ensure an enjoyable client journey. About 90% of our work comes from word-of-mouth referrals. Clients appreciate Paul’s personable approach and our professionalism. We have robust administrative processes and a structured team, including a dedicated operations manager, which supports effective communication and project management.
How do you find the construction industry as a woman?
Initially, it was challenging. Emails went unanswered until I signed off as Paul. It was frustrating coming from a respected healthcare role to starting from scratch in construction. But with continuous learning and the right team, I gained confidence and respect in the industry.
Any personal hobbies or interests?
We have a four-year-old son. I love exercise—it’s my daily prescription. I also have a passion for business and learning. If I could start a new business every day, I would.
What’s your favourite brew?
A skinny cappuccino. The Colombian cafe in Mooloolaba is the best spot for it!
