The Block is back in production, gearing up for another season of high-stakes renos and reality TV drama. It’s one of Australia’s most-watched building shows, and undeniably entertaining (at times).
But here’s the problem: it’s not just The Block.
We’ve heard from our community the entire genre of renovation and home transformation shows is feeding a growing disconnect between what homeowners think building looks like… and what it actually involves.
Entertainment is One Thing…But This is People’s Livelihoods
In these shows, timelines are compressed, budgets are bendy, and the messier parts of construction — compliance, trade scheduling, material lead times — are left on the cutting room floor. The result? Clients walk onto sites expecting a transformation in weeks, not months.
These shows might be produced for prime time, but they’re creating real-world challenges:
- Unrealistic build timelines
- Budget misunderstandings
- Underappreciation for skilled trades
- Increased pressure on small-to-medium builders to “match the magic”
Building’s Not a Montage…It’s a Craft
Onscreen, we see dramatic reveals. Offscreen, there are phone calls with certifiers, deliveries delayed by weeks, apprentices learning under pressure, and seasoned trades ensuring a job is done once — and done right.
You don’t see:
- Builders and their teams doing the 6am toolbox talks
- When things don’t go right and you’ve got a three-week wait for windows
- The insurance discussions and warranty implications
- The 20-year career it takes to know what not to do
So What’s the Answer?
We’re not here to cancel renovation TV. But we do want to champion the builders doing it right, and help educate the market about what it actually takes to deliver a quality home.
The building industry doesn’t need better PR. It needs real stories from real builders, the ones who:
✅ Work with clients on realistic timelines and budgets
✅ Don’t chase shortcuts just to win jobs
✅ Know how to build trust before building walls
Let’s Shift the Story Together
