The construction industry has long been a heavily male-dominated industry, with cultural barriers and outdated perceptions often standing in the way of progress. Yet, change is underway, and it’s being driven by strong leadership and inclusive culture.

At The Good Builder, we’re proud to celebrate the women who are leading the charge in our business. Renae, who spearheads our business and operations management, and Topaz, our creative lead across brand and socials, exemplify what it means to lead with strength, innovation, and purpose.

Culture plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of construction. As Cathryn Greville, CEO of NAWIC, said in her NSW International Women’s Day Speech:

“Culture is the big and the small. The behaviour you walk past. The standard you accept every day.”

For too long, women have faced challenges in this sector, including a lack of opportunity and flexibility. NAWIC’s research reveals that 88% of women in construction have experienced microaggressions, and 72% of women in trade apprenticeships drop out in their first year. It’s a wake-up call for the industry to do better.

Leadership is key to changing this narrative. As Cathryn highlighted,

“Getting culture right doesn’t just make a difference; it’s essential to unlocking the potential of our sector.”

When businesses prioritise fairness, inclusion, and respect, they create environments where women can thrive.

Our TGB women are testaments to this. We are a small team, and it’s the early days for us at the Good Builder. Through their leadership, strategy and ideas, The Good Builder is building a culture where diverse voices are heard and leading the way. They inspire not only within our organisation but also across the broader industry, showing that inclusion and innovation go hand in hand.

Our co-founder, Aaron Ng reflected on the day’s significance,

“To our very own Renae, you have seriously made The Good Builder happen while I take continuous selfies. To all our women contributors and community members, thank you for making the industry better and helping us raise the bar!”

“As 1 of 4 kids raised by a single Mum, I know the strength, resilience, intelligence and love women possess and it’s so much stronger than any cyclone.”

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate their contributions and continue to commit to fostering an inclusive culture that empowers more women to step into leadership roles in the construction sector and any other that they so choose, for that matter.

A very special thanks also goes out to those women who are supporting change and innovation in our industry and for contributing to The Good Builder this last month.

Let’s continue to build a better future together.
