The Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) has announced a new interim leader, with Skye Bowie appointed as Interim CEO and Commissioner while the recruitment process for a permanent appointment continues.

Backed by the QBC Board and with the approval of the Minister for Housing and Public Works, The Honourable Sam O’Connor MP, Skye steps into the role with over two decades of experience in regulatory leadership. Since January 2023, she has been Acting Chief Building Regulator and has held senior positions within the QBCC, including Company Secretary and Chief Integrity and Risk Officer.

Her background spans Commonwealth Government regulatory roles, as well as domestic and international finance and insurance giving her a unique lens on risk, governance, and industry accountability.

According to the QBCC, Skye is widely respected for her strategic direction, innovation, and her ability to lead with both conviction and empathy. It’s a combination the industry may welcome as it navigates increasing pressure around compliance, licensing, and consumer protection in a volatile market.

For builders and contractors, the announcement signals continuity. Skye is no stranger to the QBCC’s internal workings and stakeholder expectations. Her appointment could help provide a steady hand during a time of increased scrutiny and reform in the building and construction sector.

While it’s an interim appointment, it comes at a time when leadership clarity is needed most, particularly as builders continue to manage cost pressures, regulatory compliance, and shifting expectations from both clients and the government.

At The Good Builder, we welcome the appointment of a leader with a strong understanding of both policy and people. We’re optimistic about what this means for builders doing the right thing and building better for Queensland.
