Australian drainage manufacturer Lauxes Grates has expanded its finish options across two of its most widely specified product lines, with Gold and Brushed Nickel now available in both its Standard and Tile Insert Plus grates.

The move responds to a growing demand from builders, designers and renovators seeking greater alignment between floor wastes and the broader bathroom hardware palette. While drainage is rarely the hero of a bathroom fitout, it is increasingly being treated as a considered design element rather than a purely functional component.

Expanding the design conversation

Lauxes Grates has built its reputation on lightweight, rust resistant drainage solutions designed for Australian conditions. Manufactured from anodised aluminium, the company’s grates are known for their corrosion resistance and suitability for both indoor and outdoor use.

Until recently, most projects defaulted to more traditional finishes such as silver or matte black. The addition of Gold and Brushed Nickel broadens the aesthetic scope, particularly as tapware and hardware trends continue to shift.

Brushed Nickel has become a staple in contemporary bathroom design, often favoured for its softer, less reflective appearance compared to polished chrome. Gold, particularly in brushed or satin variations, is also seeing renewed interest in higher end residential projects where warmer tones are being specified across tapware, shower frames and cabinetry handles.

By extending these finishes to drainage products, Lauxes Grates is effectively removing a small but noticeable design compromise that can occur when floor grates fail to match surrounding fixtures.

Standard and Tile Insert Plus lines

The updated finishes are available across two core ranges.

The Standard grate is designed as a visible feature, with a clean linear appearance intended to complement modern bathroom layouts. It is typically specified where the grate itself forms part of the visual language of the space.

The Tile Insert Plus grate, by contrast, allows a tile to be inserted into the top of the grate tray. This creates a more seamless finish, where the drainage channel remains visible but blends more closely with the surrounding floor.

Offering both ranges in Gold and Brushed Nickel gives builders flexibility depending on whether a client is seeking contrast or subtlety.

Practical considerations for builders

From a construction perspective, finish changes can often raise questions around durability and maintenance. According to information provided on the company’s website, Lauxes Grates products are designed to be rust resistant and lightweight, with anodised aluminium construction aimed at long term performance.

For builders working across coastal regions or humid climates, material selection is critical. Aluminium based grates can offer advantages over traditional steel products in environments prone to corrosion.

Ease of installation is also a key consideration. The company positions its systems as builder friendly, with designs intended to integrate smoothly into standard bathroom construction workflows.

While the aesthetic shift may be the headline, the underlying performance characteristics remain consistent with the existing range.

Reflecting broader market shifts

The release also reflects a wider shift occurring across the residential construction market.

Bathrooms have become a focal point for customisation, even in mid range builds. Social media platforms and renovation shows have raised homeowner expectations around finishes and detailing. Clients are now more likely to request coordinated hardware packages, down to elements that were once overlooked.

For suppliers, responding quickly to these micro trends can be a competitive advantage. Offering a broader finish range allows builders to say yes to more client requests without sourcing niche components from multiple vendors.

It also signals a recognition that small specification details can influence perceived build quality. A mismatched grate in an otherwise carefully designed bathroom can undermine the overall finish.

A small detail with growing influence

Drainage may not carry the same visibility as cabinetry or tapware, but it sits within direct sightlines in most bathroom layouts. As clients become more design literate, alignment across finishes is increasingly expected rather than appreciated as a bonus.

By expanding its Standard and Tile Insert Plus lines into Gold and Brushed Nickel, Lauxes Grates is positioning itself to meet that expectation.

For builders and designers, the practical outcome is simple. More choice. More consistency. Fewer compromises at handover.

As the residential market continues to balance cost pressures with client expectations, incremental improvements in product offering such as this can help builders deliver a more cohesive end result without significantly altering construction processes.

In a sector where trust is often built on attention to detail, even the humble floor grate has a role to play.
