The Queensland construction industry has officially gone digital. More than 105,000 tradies, contractors, and builders now have access to their Queensland Building and Construction Commission (QBCC) licences through the Queensland Digital Licence app, marking a major step forward in streamlining the way the state’s tradespeople manage their credentials.
This initiative, part of the QLD’s Government’s commitment to “a better lifestyle through a stronger economy,”represents a long-awaited milestone for Queensland’s building industry, one that promises greater efficiency, improved security, and better verification for homeowners.
A Modern Solution for an Industry on the Move
The new digital licence rollout delivers a long-overdue upgrade to how tradies carry and present their credentials. For years, builders and tradespeople relied on physical cards and paper records to verify licences, a system prone to loss, delay, and fraud.
Now, through the Queensland Digital Licence app, users can store, view, and share their QBCC credentials instantly. Licences available include plumbing and drainage, fire occupational, mechanical services, building certifier, contractor, and nominee supervisor categories.
Minister for Housing and Public Works Sam O’Connor described the move as a “game changer” for the state’s construction sector.
“By adding QBCC licences to the Queensland Digital Licence app, we’re making it easier than ever for tradies, inspectors, site supervisors and more to carry and verify their credentials on the go,” O’Connor said. “For homeowners, it means they can easily verify licensed contractors in real time.”
Since the initial rollout on 30 September, more than 5,000 tradies have already gone digital, with the final wave on 4 November extending access to an additional 70,000 licence holders.
Boosting Security and Cutting Red Tape
At the heart of the new system are industry-leading security measures designed to reduce red tape and protect personal data. Through the app, licence holders can:
- Safely store multiple credentials in one place.
- Instantly check the status of their licence active, due for renewal, or expired.
- Protect against identity theft and fraudulent use of credentials.
Minister for Customer Services and Open Data Steve Minnikin said the change is about giving Queenslanders greater choice and confidence.
“Our goal is to ensure that every Queenslander, no matter their age, ability, language, or location, can access the services they need when they need them,” Minnikin said. “Expanding our digital licence app not only benefits QBCC licence holders by reducing red tape, but it also provides peace of mind to businesses and homeowners, knowing that the information provided by their tradespeople is up to date, legitimate and secure.”
Part of a Bigger Digital Push
The expansion into construction comes as part of a broader digital transformation strategy by the Crisafulli Government. The Queensland Digital Licence app, which already provides access to digital driver’s licences, recreational marine licences, and photo identification cards, now boasts over 1.1 million users, with around 1,000 new sign-ups daily.
By digitising QBCC licences, the government has addressed a long-standing issue that saw the previous rollout delayed under the former administration. For the construction industry where compliance, verification, and safety are paramount the move brings immediate, tangible benefits.
As O’Connor explained, “We are allowing easier, secure sharing and real-time updates, removing the requirement of a physical card and improving efficiency across the board.”
Backed by Industry
Industry bodies have welcomed the rollout, describing it as a practical and overdue step toward modernising the building sector.
Penny Cornah, CEO of the Master Plumbers’ Association of Queensland, said the change will simplify operations for licence holders and improve interactions with the QBCC.
“It’s a practical and modern solution that makes it easier for licence holders to manage their credentials, reduces paperwork, and supports the QBCC’s digital transformation to improve efficiency and customer experience,” Cornah said.
The shift also opens the door to further innovation across the industry from faster onboarding and compliance checks on site to improved coordination between trades, builders, and certifiers.
What It Means for Builders and Homeowners
For builders, digital licensing means less downtime chasing paperwork and greater clarity across projects. Site supervisors can instantly verify the status of team members’ licences, while contractors can update details without waiting for new cards to arrive.
Homeowners also stand to benefit. Through the app’s verification features, clients can instantly check whether a builder or tradesperson is licensed and insured helping to reduce the risk of unqualified work and fraudulent activity.
In an era where trust and transparency are increasingly vital to the industry’s reputation, this move represents more than just a technical upgrade, it’s a signal of accountability.
