In a bold move to stimulate its housing market and support aspiring homeowners, the Northern Territory (NT) Government has announced the extension of its HomeGrown Territory and FreshStart New Home grants until September 30, 2026. This initiative offers substantial financial incentives—up to $50,000—for individuals building or purchasing new homes in the Territory.

Unpacking the Grants

The HomeGrown Territory Grant provides $50,000 to first-home buyers who build or purchase a new home in the NT. This grant is also available to owner-builders and those buying off-the-plan properties. 

For existing homeowners, the FreshStart New Home Grant offers $30,000 towards building or buying a new home. Both grants aim to alleviate the financial burden of homeownership and encourage population growth in the region. 

It’s important to note that the separate $10,000 grant for purchasing established homes will conclude as scheduled on September 30, 2025. 

Economic Impact and Industry Response

Since the launch of these grants in October 2024, the NT has witnessed a significant uptick in housing activity. Over $7.2 million in grants have been distributed to 479 recipients, contributing to a 48.6% increase in building approvals and a 13.2% rise in construction work year-over-year. 

NT Treasurer Bill Yan emphasized the grants’ role in economic recovery:

“Building approvals are up 48.6% over the year to March, the second strongest growth in the nation, and much of that can be attributed to the success of these grants.” 

Industry leaders have lauded the extension. Neil Sunners, President of Master Builders NT, stated:

“Master Builders NT welcomes the extension of the homebuilder grants that will further encourage new home builds and provide a wider impact in relation to supporting local builders, providing local jobs and more …  

Eligibility and Application

To qualify for these grants, applicants must:

• Be Australian citizens or permanent residents.
  
• Sign a contract to build or purchase a new home between October 1, 2024, and September 30, 2026.
  
• Ensure the home is their principal place of residence for at least 12 months after completion.
  
• For the HomeGrown Territory Grant, applicants must be first-home buyers who have not previously owned property in Australia.

Applications can be submitted through financial institutions or directly to the Territory Revenue Office. The grants can also be used as part of the deposit, subject to lender approval. 

A National Leader in Housing Support

With these grants, the NT offers the most generous homeownership incentives in Australia. For comparison, Queensland provides up to $30,000 for first-home buyers, while South Australia offers $15,000. 

The NT Government’s commitment aims not only to boost the housing sector but also to attract new residents and retain existing ones, fostering long-term economic growth and community development.
