Extended $30k grant and stamp duty abolition signal strong support for the building industry

Summary:

The Queensland Government has reinforced its commitment to increasing home ownership and stimulating the state’s construction sector, extending the $30,000 First Home Owner Grant through to June 30, 2026. Combined with the recent abolition of stamp duty on new builds for first home buyers, this move puts builders at the centre of the government’s housing affordability and supply strategy.

The message is clear: Queensland needs more homes, and builders will be key to delivering them.

A Budget That Backs the Building Industry

The Crisafulli Government’s first Budget includes a series of measures designed to tackle Queensland’s housing crisis by supporting builders to bring more homes to market. Extending the $30k First Home Owner Grant for an additional year, combined with scrapping stamp duty for first buyers on new builds, delivers a clear vote of confidence in the state’s construction industry.

Premier David Crisafulli said:

“We are unlocking the door to home ownership for thousands more Queenslanders who have been locked out from their first home for too long.”

He also acknowledged the vital role builders will play:

“Boosting the First Home Owner Grant and delivering on our promise to abolish stamp duty for first buyers on new homes is also driving more homes to be built across our State.”

What This Means for Builders

For Queensland builders, this package creates a more favourable environment to drive new-build demand — particularly in the first home buyer segment.

Key impacts include:

  • Increased interest from first home buyers in the $550,000 to $750,000 range
  • Greater affordability through a $30,000 grant and an average $16,996 in stamp duty savings
  • More opportunities for builders to market affordable new home solutions
  • Renewed pipeline for builders focusing on house and land packages

The initiative is also expected to ease financing stress, with buyers now permitted to rent out a room in their new home to assist with mortgage repayments.

Builders who position themselves to support and educate first home buyers on these savings will be well placed to capture this emerging demand.

Industry Welcomes the Move

Industry leaders have welcomed the policy extension and its positive flow-on effects for the building sector.

Michael Loney, Joint Managing Director of Ausbuild and President of UDIA QLD, said:

“At Ausbuild, we know that when programs like the Queensland First Home Owner Grant and stamp duty concessions work together, they make the dream of home ownership a real and achievable goal for more Queenslanders.”

Treasurer and Minister for Home Ownership David Janetzki reinforced the government’s focus on supporting the sector:

“Supporting first home buyers in Queensland is about creating opportunities, removing financial barriers and making home ownership a reality for more Queenslanders.”

A Timely Opportunity for Builders

The government has committed to lifting Queensland’s home ownership rate to the highest in the nation within a decade. Builders will be central to achieving this goal.

Now is the time for builders to:

  • Highlight the combined $30k grant and stamp duty savings in their marketing
  • Collaborate with land agents and mortgage brokers to package affordable solutions
  • Streamline pathways for first home buyers through sales teams
  • Share success stories of first buyers entering the market

With the grant available for eligible contracts signed between 20 November 2023 and 30 June 2026, the window is open — and so is the opportunity.
