Brew with a Builder – Our Chat with Jayden Martello, Founder of JMAR Building Co.

The Good Builder is all about shining a spotlight on builders who are raising the bar, so we love to chat with some of the best in the business to find out what makes them tick. This week, in our series of casual chats in Brew with a Builder, we sit down with Jayden Martello, Founder of JMAR Building Co., to uncover some of the secrets that have made his business a success, and one of the most motivated young builders we’ve met. This is the future of the industry and we love to get to know them.

Welcome to Brew with a Builder, what first attracted you to becoming a builder?

Ever since a young age, all I wanted to do was be outdoors. I loved the idea of diggers, tools and watching my dad tinker in the shed. Our family home was renovated when I was 5 years old and I loved going onto the construction site and seeing what the builders were up too. I know it’s strange to think even in my 5-year-old self, but I always knew what I was going to do with my life and I have never had any other inklings to pursue a different career. From age 6, my old man used to give me a bucket of nails, a hammer and a block of timber and I would sit there for hours trying to hammer in these nails. I loved woodwork at school and every chance I had, I did work experience with local carpenters and builders. (I have a photo of myself when I was a young boy all dressed up in construction gear, when I find it I’ll send it across!)

I have a vision of the homes I want to create, and knew that working for someone else this dream wouldn’t come to light. I am still working on that dream every day and am determined to make it happen.

What was the most memorable event during your apprenticeship?

Honestly, I had many moments throughout my time. My boss was good to me, he took the time to teach me and eventually threw me in the deep end. I believed this was pivotable to how I am today as it made me think a lot more for myself.

We all get advice through our careers. What’s the best advice you’ve had so far?

There’s a fine line between quality and quantity to do well and be profitable in business, but once you can find that sweet spot you will exceed your own expectations

And who’s been your biggest mentor?

There are many people who have had an influence on me but Duayne Pearce has by far had the biggest impact in my life.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen on a work site?

It is always a bit of a laugh when you have a new apprentice onboard and tell them to get the left handed screw driver out of the truck.

And what’s something interesting about you that your work mates wouldn’t know about you?

I absolutely love building with Lego!

And this is called Brew with a Builder,  what is your favourite brew?

Not a beer but love an American honey with coke on a Friday night to finish the week.
