Dan Urquhart didn’t set out to become a builder. Like many in the trade, he fell into building young, armed with a nail bag, and a family legacy of construction behind him. But the story that unfolded wasn’t about timber and trusses, it was about burnout, mindset, and eventually, a deeper calling.

Now, as the founder of 1000 Feet Deep, Dan is helping business owners rebuild from the inside out, not with bricks, but with belief, faith, hope and a way to get there.

From Running Builds to Running on Empty

Dan’s building journey started like many others: an apprenticeship under his uncle, a rough return to Newcastle when the work dried up, and a period of scraping by while raising a family young.

“It just felt like pressure, stress — something I didn’t really want to be a part of,” he admitted on The Good Builder podcast.

But despite the rocky start, Dan rose to become one of the most respected builders in his franchise. “We used to sit him on all our panels,” recalls Aaron Ng, host of the pod. “He was someone we looked up to, a leader without needing the title.”

That leadership came at a cost. By the time he was five years into running his own franchise, building over 40 homes a year and caring deeply for every client and team member, the cracks were showing.

“The business was just way too big for me to be able to deal with every issue on my own… That’s what broke us.”

He didn’t go broke financially, but mentally and emotionally, Dan was done. “It was taking everything to get there. And that was unsustainable.”

The Moment Everything Changed

Somewhere in that fatigue came a realisation: the problem wasn’t the industry. It wasn’t the team. It wasn’t even the clients.

It was the approach.

“I realised I was no longer a builder of homes. I was a builder of people.”

Dan shifted focus — not on working harder, but on leading better. He stopped playing every position on the field and started coaching. He invested in his team. He built systems. He trained leaders. And it worked.

The business began to breathe.

And something else stirred too — a desire to help others avoid the same flame-out.

From Site Manager to Mindset Coach

That’s where 1000 Feet Deep was born, not from theory, but from experience. Dan now works with business owners and leaders across industries through his Hand, Head, Heart framework.

The name speaks volumes.
