A Founder Who Saw The Problem First-Hand

When Mark Corkery founded Onsite Scanning Solutions, it was not a business play. It was a response to the same frustrations builders face every day. After years working in scaffolding and design, Mark saw how often engineering drawings technically checked out on paper but failed on site. Designs were compliant, but they did not line up with the real world because the engineers producing them had never physically built the structures they were approving.

His scaffold consulting firm, Scaffold Studio, entered the market by promising something simple. Designs that actually work. Designs shaped by people who knew the practical realities of construction. That practical focus is what eventually led Mark to 3D scanning.

The Turning Point: Cladding Replacement And No Reliable Plans

During the national wave of flammable cladding replacement, Scaffold Studio faced an escalating problem. Many buildings had no usable documentation. Some clients were literally pacing out their measurements on video and texting them through. In multi storey buildings with residents inside and elevated safety risks, that level of guesswork was dangerous and costly.

Mark needed accuracy. He needed speed. And he needed a way to gain it without relying on outdated plans or client assumptions.

This is where 3D scanning first entered the picture.

Falling In Love With The Technology, But Not The Price Tag

The early scanners Mark trialled were Trimble units. They delivered astonishing accuracy down to around 1.8 millimetres. They also cost roughly $100,000 upfront and close to $10,000 a year in software subscriptions. They were brilliant, but out of reach for almost every builder.

Mark and his team spent more than a year trialling scanners from all over the world. Some were fast but unstable. Some were accurate but slow. Some were powerful but required tablets that were impossible to replace if they broke.

Then they found a unit from Singapore that struck the balance.

Affordable. Stable. Licence free. Fast to set up. And practical enough for everyday use on site.

They bought several units for their own team. Their clients saw them. And this is where everything shifted.

The Accidental Birth Of Onsite Scanning Solutions

Clients kept asking where they could buy the scanners. They asked whether Mark’s team would supply them. They asked for a simple way to capture their site data and send it back to Scaffold Studio.

Mark resisted at first. Reselling was never the model.

But the industry need became impossible to ignore. Builders wanted the same efficiency and accuracy that Scaffold Studio now had inside their own workflows. They wanted technology that worked in real world conditions and not just in brochures.

Onsite Scanning Solutions was born from that demand. A company built by the user, not by a salesperson.

Training From People Who Actually Use The Technology

One thing Mark wanted to avoid was the classic reseller model. A box dropped at your door with a manual attached. No training, no guidance and no support.

When Onsite delivers a scanner, it is an engineer or designer who arrives. The same people who scan daily for their own work. They bring videos, guides and quick start material so teams can begin scanning on the first day.

For builders who fear wasting time or struggling through new tech, this is a major shift. As Mark puts it, he has purchased plenty of tools that sat on a shelf for six months simply because he could not afford for them not to work on the first try.

From Setup To Scan In Two Minutes

A major reason this technology is now accessible to smaller builders is speed and simplicity.

Set up takes under a minute.
Connecting a phone or iPad takes another.
Within two minutes builders can begin scanning.

Data transfers via a stable WiFi connection. The software is free. Every team member can download the app. There is no need to buy a specialised tablet or integrate a new device into your system.

In short, anyone on the team can walk onto a site and capture a scan in real time.

Builders can:

  • Measure anything live, including square metres
  • Identify power lines, trees, drainage pits and obstructions
  • Plan traffic management and crane placement
  • Detect clashes before they occur
  • Review access and egress
  • Improve tender accuracy

As Mark points out, most blown margins come from poor data at the start of a job. Not because planners lack skill, but because they are working from incomplete or inaccurate information.

Good data removes that excuse.

Stakeholder Buy In Made Easier

Public buildings, schools, universities and body corporates often push back on proposed work simply because they cannot visualise it. They do not understand 2D plans. They do not know whether their fire egress is blocked. They do not see how deliveries will work.

With scans that include HD video, builders can show exactly what will happen. They can demonstrate that fire routes remain clear, access is maintained and deliveries will not disrupt operations.

The result is faster approvals, less confusion and more trust.

Digital As Builds That Transform Handover

Some builders are now scanning at every major stage.
Piers before the pour.
Slabs before placement.
Frames.
Rough ins.
Services.

Builders can prove pier depth, slab thickness, and the exact path of wiring and plumbing. Owners can see where every pipe sits. They can renovate safely years later. They can trust the work because they can see it.

For an industry where confidence has been eroded, this is powerful.

Culture, Communication And The Ripple Effect

One unexpected outcome is better relationships inside businesses. Office staff and site staff can finally look at the same model. They can diagnose problems in seconds rather than arguing about descriptions. Stress reduces. Communication improves. Teams work together.

Even Mark acknowledges that the real return on investment is not always financial. Sometimes it is cultural.

A Technology Built On Time, Transparency And Trust

The Good Builder often speaks about the power of impacting time, transparency and trust. Onsite Scanning Solutions directly influences all three. Faster work. Clearer data. Stronger relationships.

According to Mark, a good builder is someone who is accountable and proud of their work. Someone who uses information to solve problems before they become disasters.

And in that sense, this technology is built for good builders.
