When most people think of carpentry, they picture the tools—the hammer, the nails, the timber. But at Carpentry Australia, the mission goes far beyond the tools. It’s about the people holding them.
Speaking on The Good Builder Podcast, Nathan Quinn, one of the voices behind Carpentry Australia, laid out a vision not only for the trade, but for the people shaping it: “Our goal is to really keep the hammer swinging longer.”
It’s a phrase that captures more than longevity. It speaks to the care, resilience, and community required to build a sustainable career in construction—especially as the industry faces a national shortage of skilled workers.
From First Day Apprentice to Industry Champion
Carpentry Australia doesn’t draw a line between the apprentice and the trainer. It views the industry as an ecosystem. Quinn explains:
“We support yesterday’s, today’s, and tomorrow’s heroes. That includes the apprentice whose first day it is, right through to someone who’s come off the tools and is now teaching the next generation. It’s the sole trader who suddenly decides they want to scale up. We’re there for every step of that journey.”
The organisation actively works to connect these different stages of the journey. Whether it’s through networking events, on-site support, or leadership development, the message is clear: you don’t have to do it alone.
A Culture of Care
Beyond pathways and placements, Carpentry Australia brings a culture-first approach to the trades. Hannah Keirl, Strategic Marketing and Relationships Manager, says the priority is building not just good carpenters, but good humans.
“We don’t need to teach you how to use a hammer,” says Keirl. “We want to build really good, strong, healthy humans. We’re here to help you succeed in every part of the trade—mentally, physically, and emotionally.”
That message is backed by action. The organisation makes itself available to builders and employers who want to do right by their teams. One standout example involved a builder calling in before taking on a new apprentice—just to ask if he was missing anything.
“That’s the kind of leadership we need,” says Keirl. “And that apprentice? She’s absolutely flying.”
Stories That Stick
While the team has countless wins behind them, it’s the individual stories that drive the mission home. Like Ned—an acting graduate who pivoted to carpentry. After connecting with the Carpentry Australia team at Holmesglen TAFE, he found a placement with LMS and is now thriving. His story, titled Old Dog Learns New Tricks, is now published on CA’s website.
Or the young man placed with Limitless Build—a Carpentry Australia champion crew. Initially unsure of how he’d be received on site, he found a team that had been briefed and trained in creating a welcoming environment. Today, he’s among the first on site, showing up early with his lunch packed, and pushing the culture forward with every shift.
A National Network Built on Shared Values
None of this would be possible without a team that lives and breathes the mission. Keirl and Quinn are the public faces, but the names behind the scenes matter just as much.
“Ask any member, and the first person they mention is Maddie,” says Keirl. “He’s been with us for nearly a decade and is a trusted part of the crew. Same with Courtney in Queensland and Chris in New South Wales.”
It’s not just admin. It’s community.
Real Support in a Time of Need
With 51.9% of trade roles going unfilled in 2024, according to CSQ, there’s no denying the challenge ahead. But Carpentry Australia doesn’t just see a crisis—they see an opportunity to reframe the narrative.
Through free apprentice memberships, national events, and an expanding Employer of Choice network, they’re backing people, not just projects.
“Perfectionism is the death of progress,” says Quinn. “What matters most is putting the right people in the right places and supporting them to thrive.”
At The Good Builder, we couldn’t agree more. That’s why we’ll be continuing our coverage of Carpentry Australia throughout the year. If you’re someone shaping culture on site or forging your own journey through the trade, we want to hear from you.
