What if you could design a home from your laptop…and have it built, delivered, and assembled at a fraction of today’s build costs?

At The Good Builder, we’ll always keep a close eye on developments that could reshape the way homes are conceived and constructed and how they could impact our community.

One such development gaining attention is Zuru Tech, a global venture from New Zealander Nick Mowbray, best known for founding ZURU Toys.

While Mowbray made his name in the toy industry, Zuru Tech signals an ambitious shift into housing, backed by years of research, advanced manufacturing principles, and a growing team of over 900 architects, engineers, and robotics specialists. The core idea: digitise the entire construction process, from design through to delivery.

What’s Different About Zuru Tech?

  • Digital-First Design: Zuru has developed its own Building Information Modelling (BIM) platform that allows customers to customise and configure home designs online. Every element is engineered for manufacturing from the outset.
  • Manufacturing at Scale: Rather than traditional on-site builds, homes are produced with robotic precision in a factory setting, removing many of the variables that slow down or compromise build quality.
  • Cost and Speed: Zuru claims its homes could be delivered at $300–$600 per square metre, significantly lower than conventional construction rates. They also aim to cut standard timelines in half, delivering homes in months instead of years.
  • Warranty and Longevity: With prefabricated, high-quality materials and a tightly controlled process, the company is offering a 100-year structural warranty.

The company’s R&D headquarters in Italy combines automation, design, and architectural precision. The team spent years studying manufacturing technologies across multiple industries before finalising their model.

Why This Matters to the Australian Building Sector

While it remains early days for widespread adoption, particularly given Australia’s regulatory environment and local building customs, Zuru Tech’s model introduces a number of important considerations:

  • Changing Expectations: Consumers may begin demanding faster, more affordable builds as new technologies set new benchmarks.
  • Challenges to Traditional Methods: Builders may face growing pressure on margins and timelines if these systems gain traction.

Potential for Collaboration: Forward-thinking builders and suppliers might see opportunity in integrating prefabrication and digital workflows into their own operations.

We’d Love To Hear From Our Community…

Whether Zuru Tech will scale to the point of disrupting national construction sectors is yet to be seen. However, we see it representing a compelling case study of what’s possible when industrial thinking is applied to residential home building. It also reflects a broader global trend towards automation, digitisation, and offsite construction.

We’ll continue to monitor what Zuru Tech gets up to in this space and explore what they might mean for builders on the ground.

We’ll also be sure to reach out to Nick and the Zuru Tech team for comment.
