When Ed Ross co-founded TradeMutt, it wasn’t to make a fashion statement. It was to start a conversation—the kind of conversation that could save a life.

Speaking on The Good Builder Podcast, Ed shared how a single idea between two tradies on a job site turned into a movement that now funds mental health support for thousands across the industry. But it didn’t start with a crisis. It started with a conversation.

“We’re just two blokes that were like, there’s a mental health problem. And we feel that we can collectively work together to change history and the culture of helping behaviour.”

Why We Need to Intervene Earlier

For too long, mental health in construction has been treated as something you only talk about in crisis. The stats are well known, but the problem remains: too many people are reaching a breaking point before they reach out.

Ed and his co-founder Dan Allen wanted to change that.

“We’re really trying to cut the space between just a general conversation about mental health and Lifeline,” Ed explained.

That space is where TIACS (This Is A Conversation Starter) operates. A free, industry-funded mental health counselling service, TIACS bridges the gap between a bad day and a downward spiral. No cost. No GP referrals. No waitlists.

And it’s working.

A Culture That Wasn’t Built to Talk

The construction industry hasn’t always been the most welcoming place for conversations about feelings. But that doesn’t mean people don’t want to talk. They just needed permission—and a prompt.

“The mental health landscape at the time was so hard to navigate,” said Ed. “People would say, ‘Don’t even talk about it—you might trigger someone.’ How are we ever going to fix this if we’re not even allowed to talk?”

TradeMutt’s work shirts became that invitation. Bright. Unmissable. With the words “This Is A Conversation Starter” stitched on the back.

“It stops people in their tracks. It gets people talking.”

Building a Better Way Forward

TIACS is more than a phone line. It’s a shift in mindset. By making it easy for tradies to talk to someone, Ed and Dan are helping to normalise what should never have been stigmatised in the first place.

“We knew nothing about mental health when we started. Nothing about ourselves, really. But once you crack that egg, it all comes out. And now, we’re helping others do the same.”

In 2024, TIACS saw its biggest intake yet. Most callers were from within the industry. That’s not a sign of weakness—it’s a sign that the message is getting through.

Funded by Industry, For Industry

TIACS doesn’t rely on government grants. It’s powered by suppliers, builders, trades, and industry groups who want to do more than post about mental health once a year.

“You can fund a full-time counsellor for 12 months. Or just contribute monthly to keep the phones open. Every bit helps.”

As Ed explains, it’s not about preaching. It’s about showing up for people who want to be better.

“We’re going to those who want to grow. We’re not telling anyone they need to. But if they’re ready, we’re here.”

A Call to Builders Everywhere

At The Good Builder, we’re proud to support TradeMutt and TIACS. We believe in their message because we’ve seen it work.

If you’re a builder, supplier, or tradie and you want to do more for mental health in your crew, get behind this initiative. Whether it’s a donation, a partnership, or a conversation on site—it matters.

And if you’re struggling yourself, reach out. TIACS is free, confidential, and here to talk.
