The home-building landscape is shifting, and TGB caught up with leading interior designer and Open Homes Australia host James Treble, to understand three clear trends that builders need to be aware of in 2025.

1. Sustainability and Material Origins Matter More Than Ever

“People, clients more than ever, are after the story of where their products are coming from, what they’re made from, and what happens at the end of life,” says Treble. While sustainability has been a buzzword for years, he notes that it’s now a reality driving purchasing decisions. Treble explains,

“The sad reality is that we’re very clever in Australia… we invent things and then we sell our ideas around the world.”

“We really need to get manufacturing back up because we’re capable of building and doing everything here.” Builders who can provide transparency around the sourcing and sustainability of their materials will be ahead of the game.

2. Reputation and Relationships Are Everything

In an industry where trust is paramount, Treble stresses the importance of relationships. “We want to have that sense of trust, so working with a good brand, finding out who the builders are, what they’ve built before, and getting that word-of-mouth feedback from past clients makes a big difference.”

Treble believes that a strong reputation isn’t just a nice-to-have, it’s a necessity.

“Reputation is everything. Quality of service and sustainability.”

“I think they’re the big words for me.” Builders who foster strong client relationships and maintain high standards will stand out in a competitive market.

3. Streamlining the Client Journey Through Smarter Processes

Builders who refine their processes will have a distinct advantage. “Their processes are really important,” Treble states. “We are all one story, the builder, the interior designer, the client, and the council approvals. If builders can streamline this process without cutting corners, they’ll create a better experience for everyone involved.”

With fluctuating interest rates and material costs, efficiency is more important than ever.

“When things are tough, ingenuity comes out of bad situations.”

Treble points out. “It’s about making things simpler for clients while maintaining quality.” Builders who can offer a seamless journey, balancing efficiency with craftsmanship, will thrive in 2025.
