Queensland has a new State Planner with Peta Harwood starting the role this week.
Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie appointed Ms Harwood, who has been directed to unlock more housing approvals.
Ms Harwood will lead the important Planning Group within the Department of State Development Infrastructure and Planning.
One of her biggest tasks will be to get the new Sunshine Coast Council Planning Scheme over the line – with council and the state government yet to agree on the plan.
When asked about the delivery deadline for the new planning scheme, the new State Planner wouldn’t be drawn on a timeline. Ms Harwood said,
“The Queensland Government is currently considering the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme for state interests.”
“Following this, Sunshine Coast Council will need to conduct mandatory public consultation before the scheme can come into place.
“At this early stage of the review, it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
The Queensland Government is responsible for administering the state’s planning framework. Both the Queensland government and local governments share the responsibility for the delivery and operation of the planning framework.
The State Planning Policy and regional plans, such as ShapingSEQ 2023 set out the state’s interests in plan making, which are delivered through local government planning schemes.
Local governments are responsible for preparing their local planning schemes that guide growth and development in each local government area while the Queensland Government reviews and approves the local planning schemes.
Updates on the Scheme can be found here.
